Sven Longshanks and Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson look at the ongoing coup in Venezuela and discover it is not as simple as just right wing against left.
Venezuela is one of the most oil rich countries in the world, yet because Chavez wanted that money to go to the Venezuelans instead of the oil barons it was put under sanction by the US.
Maduro was then elected and continued the same socialist policies of Chavez. Although both follow socialism, it is a brand of national socialism as it is not based on exporting the ideology around the rest of the world.
The politicians involved are patriots, they can even be seen wearing the country’s flag.
Russia had just sealed a 5 billion dollar deal with the country in December, shortly before the American sponsored Guaido declared President Maduro illegitimate.
The leader of the opposition who America and the EU have now recognised as the legitimate president, was not elected by the people and serves the wishes of the oil barons and oligarchs.
America is now encouraging a civil war in the country between the supporters of Guaido and Maduro that looks suspiciously similar to what happened in Libya and Syria.
