Sven Longshanks and Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson discuss the banning of Jehova’s Witnesses in Russia and elsewhere and the good reasons for doing so.
The Jehova’s Witnesses were banned as an extremist organisation in 2017 as they refuse to allow their members to do military service and prevent children from accepting blood transfusions.
Russia is not the only country to have done this, they are also proscribed in China, parts of Africa and some former Soviet republics. Bulgaria also tried to legislate against them, but the Watchtower were able to deceive the Bulgarian State by claiming to have changed their doctrine, which they did on the military service but they just changed the wording for the blood transfusions.
Jehova’s Witnesses are taught that the Bible prevents them from accepting blood transfusions and that if they accept one, they will lose their eternal life as well as their place in the community. They will be shunned and never spoken to again by other members of the cult. This still goes on in Bulgaria, but they now call it ‘disassociation’ instead of ‘disfellowship’.
In Russia the State took all the property of the cult and the first cult member to be jailed has just been given a 6 year sentence, a similar sentence to those found in other European countries for non-violent extremism.
