Sven Longshanks looks at de-facto censorship on drawing cartoons that depict Jews or Negroes, after a cartoonist received credible death threats for a realistic drawing of Serena Williams.
Cartoons have always honed in on particular characteristics to help viewers recognise the subject and particularly the sort of cartoons you see in newspapers. However if the subject is Negro or Jewish, then the cartoonist is running the risk of death threats and accusations of ‘racism’ . This is despite the public support for cartoonists depicting Mohammed after the Charlie Hebdo shooting.
An Australian artist made a cartoon depicting Serena Williams temper tantrum that was surprisingly life like, you could tell instantly who it was supposed to be, yet because the subject had ‘large lips, a broad flat nose (and) a wild afro-styled ponytail hair style’ he was accused of racism and making her look like an ape.
Are they saying that Negroes don’t have large lips, flat noses and afroes? Are they saying that apes have those characteristics? The cartoon was also accused of ‘sexist tropes’ when depicting women being violent and destroying sports equipment is hardly stereotypical.
Thankfully the publishing company supported their artist and now the Australian Press Council have too, by confirming that the image was not racist, but quite rightly depicted the tennis player ‘spitting the dummy’.
