Sven Longshanks and Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson discuss the disturbing decision of the US to withdraw from the INF Treaty banning mid-range nuclear weapons.
The Pentagon has been accusing Russia of violating this almost yearly since the day it was signed, while the Russians do the same. In 2016, the US put it’s missile shield in Poland and Romania, thereby voiding the treaty.
Of course, Russian actions have nothing to do with the American decision. The US has violated the treaty many times. In the event of a war with Russia and China, the US cannot win in a conventional sense. Overthrowing the INF treaty means that the nuclear option remains on the table for the US in the extreme case of total European defeat.
Just as importantly, the threat of a nuclear war would revive the old 1980s fears of a “holocaust” that could unify a broken US and UK against the “Russian enemy.” Not just Russia, but the Chinese too protested this missile shield placed in Central Europe. Maj. Gen. Cai Jun, the vice head of the Central Military Commission Joint Staff Department's warfare bureau, said in a speech at the Xiangshan Forum.
“China and Russia have similar positions about strategic anti-ballistic missile systems and oppose attempts by any nation or group of nations to create such systems unilaterally at the expense of strategic international security,” the general said. He also noted that this system can also serve as an anti-satellite defense system as well.
This show of solidarity between China and Russia should silence the American hawks. The US is courting disaster and few Americans know the reasons why. Due to this, the Pentagon is demanding a massive increase in funding of its already absurd $1 trillion (real) budget for 2020 and beyond.
The US has fallen behind Russia and China, both of whom have hypersonic missiles, like the Avenger, that can fly at 25 times the speed of sound. The US has no defense against this.
To whip up war hysteria, the UK Guardian, two days ago, ran a story that "Russian state TV" showed a military "map of potential US nuclear targets," as if the Russians were planning an attack. The hysteria will just get worse from here.
