Sven Longshanks and Carolyn Yeager discuss Hitler’s last days in the bunker and the misinformation that was spread about him surviving, first by Stalin and later by conspiracy theorists.
When all was lost at the end of the war, Hitler did the only thing left that he could do, he shot himself. This was in keeping with all noble battles of the past, where rather than accept slavery to an ignoble enemy, a soldier would fall upon his sword.
Hitler’s death is attested to by Hannah Reitsch who was actually there in the bunker, but Stalin countered her report with his own disinformation campaign claiming Hitler had escaped to Argentina.
This was in order to make Hitler look like a coward. Much of the stories about Hitler surviving came from the USSR and this is where the conspiracy theorists are getting them from.
The ‘Nero theory’ that Bjerkness invented about Hitler giving an order to kill all the Germans, was based upon a genuine quote where Hitler laments that Germany was not united enough to withstand the onslaught against them.
Sometimes people just dont want to believe the truth, because the truth is not as attractive to them as the fiction and they can make a living through selling these fictions as the truth.
