Sven Longshanks and Carolyn Yeager discuss the details of the catastrophic “sting” operation-video that has brought down the governing coalition in Austria between the center-right “People's Party” and right-wing “Freedom Party.”
Taking place just as the very important EU elections are to be held Thursday through Sunday, the “sting” caught Freedom Party Chairman [and now Austrian Vice-Chancellor] Heinz-Christian Strache, along with another party leader Johann Gudenas, relaxing in a beach vacation rental in Ibiza, Spain two years ago, meeting with a “young heiress of a Russian Oligarch,” discussing her desire to invest money in Austrian newspapers. The rental had been bugged with hidden microphones and cameras and Strache was recorded saying a number of inappropriate things for a politician, suggesting corruption.
All agree it was a trap, but a trap an experienced politician like Strache should not have fallen into. He's been forced to step down as Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has called for snap elections in September. Norbert Hofer has taken over as Freedom Party Chairman, but when Kurz insisted on firing Interior Minister Herbert Kickl too, all FPO government ministers walked off in protest.
With the government in crisis, a vote of no-confidence has also been called by the opposition, to be held next week. Will Kurz's conservative government survive? How will this affect the populist parties in the EU election this weekend? We will soon find out.
