Carolyn Yeager talks to Sven Longshanks about the EU election results in Austria and Germany and what they could mean for the Freedom Party and the AFD.
The Alternative fuer Deutschland came up short of projections, but did well in the Eastern provinces. Is there a new East-West Divide in Germany? The Greens continue to show they are the new “mainstream” liberal party, again outpacing the tired Social Democrats, taking 20% of the vote to the SPD's 15%. The AfD leaders say the Green party is now their main opponent.
In Austria, the entire government has collapsed from the effects of the Freedom Party's Ibiza-gate video scandal, after Chancellor Kurz lost a vote of no confidence on Monday. The anti-immigrant FPÖ cannot be said to be in a strong position following their weaker than expected showing in the European election. Now out of government, the face an uphill battle against Kurz's People's Party in the September snap election.
Carolyn gives her assessment of the strategies developing in both parties.
