Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson delves into the murky world of foreign aid and the use of it to influence policy in foreign countries in this week’s episode.
Donald Trump might well be impeached over an invented story in Ukraine. The story, while it's always changing, goes something like this: Journalists stumbled upon a phone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and The Donald over “military aid” to Ukraine. But isn’t Trump supposed to be pro-Russian? Yet now he is discussing military aid to Russia’s enemies? Enemies that don’t have a functional military anymore, so just what is this "military aid" and who gets it?
The President is accused of withholding this mysterious "military aid" from Ukraine pending the reopening of an investigation into Burisma Holdings, where former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter was somehow on the board of directors and under investigation for corruption. Biden threatened the Ukrainian state in Kiev, itself the product of Washington, to end the investigation or else. This, however, has not been made into an issue by the media, although it shows blatant nepotism, among many other things. Of course, Ukraine, a colony of the US, immediately called off the investigation and fired the prosecutor, Viktor Shokin in 2016.
So far, I fail to see a problem. From what I can gather, these journalists think it’s illegal to use foreign aid as a tool to influence a government. Of course, foreign aid wouldn't exist unless it could be used this way. That's what it is. Is the assumption to be that foreign aid is motivated purely by altruism with no strategic concerns? Foreign aid isn't just thrown around, it is always used strategically, there would be accusations of corruption id it wasn’t.
