Sven Longshanks and Max Musson sing the praises of England’s greatest king, Alfred the Great.
Alfred the Great had an invasion to contend with but he didn’t respond to it by outlawing criticism of the invaders.
He led his people to victory and once the enemy had been segregated, he set about doing all he could to improve the lives of his own Saxon kinsmen.
He invited craftsmen and artisans from all over Europe to London, where he built a new navy and started forming his law code.
Keeping your oath was the most important of his laws, as without people keeping their word, he would not have been able to rebuild civilisation.
He reformed the courts, created schools for the young and translated the Bible and other books from Latin into English.
He is remembered as a national hero because of his achievements, not his position or what he looked like.
He was also a man of such great piety that he was made into a saint by the Anglo-Orthodox church.
