Sven Longshanks looks at the story of a Black slave trader from Nigeria, as told by his great grand daughter who is a Nigerian journalist.
She explains that people fell into slavery either through non-payment of debt, being guilty of crimes or captured in war.
If they were bought by Africans, they would likely end up ritually slaughtered at the end of the slave owner’s life.
The Nigerians were not happy about the British ending slavery and continued doing it illegally for another hundred years, claiming that it was ordained by God.
In her great grandfather we find a parallel to the British slave traders, as he too was a philanthropist and remembered by his people for the great things he did for them.
