Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson looks at the most extreme form of asceticism found within the Orthodox Church.
“Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe” (I Corinthians 1: 20-22).
“Holy Foolishness” or “Holy Insanity” (the Russian iurodstvo) is the most extreme form of monastic self abasement and asceticism humanly possible. It consists in the renouncing of mind and virtue with complete inner self-awareness. It is the voluntary acceptance of the image of an insane and immoral person. Because such people have nothing anyone can take away, they're free to mock and attack the oligarchs. It's based on the mockery and parody of vanity. It's based on the rejection of “rule following” as the foundation of Christian life. Most of all, it's a mockery of the “respectable,” middle class form of Christianity; the Christianity of the virtue-signalers and conformists. The “Holy Fools” shock the complacent into examining their lives.
