Sven Longshanks and Max Musson look at the life of the great explorer and anti-slavery campaigner, David Livingstone.
David Livingstone was one of the most popular British heroes of the Victorian era and his exploratory work into Africa made it possible for the colonisation of the country.
He began his life working 12 hour days in the cotton mills at the age of ten, yet still managed to find the time to educate himself and become a missionary.
He saw new trade routes and colonies as being the solution to Africa’s addiction to selling its people as slaves.
He mapped the Zambezi river and was the first to discover Victoria Falls, opening up an entire new world of botany along the way.
After that he searched for the source of the Nile, famously losing touch with the outside world for six years when his guides deserted him and claimed that he had died.
His discoveries directly led to the colonisation of Africa and the replacement of the slave trade in those areas of the continent.
