Sven Longshanks and Max Musson look at Rudyard Kipling’s early years.
Kipling was born in India and saw himself as an Anglo-Indian with much of his writing being about civic national identity and racial identity.
He was known as one of the greatest poets and short story writers ever, drawing much of his inspiration from British India.
He went to boarding school in England, as was the custom for children of the upper classes who worked abroad in the empire.
After a short period as a journalist in India as an adult, Kipling moved back to London and used his Indian way of thinking to great effect in his ‘Just So Stories’.
He would become the poet of the Empire and write about the burden of the White man, whose role it was to set a good example to the rest of the world.
