Sven Longshanks and Max Musson discuss the final stages of Scott’s first expedition.
Scott, Shackleton and the expedition team head off to get as far as they could to the South Pole.
They got further than anyone else ever did before, despite bringing the wrong food for the dogs and when the dogs finally gave up, the men carried on dragging the sledges themselves, hoping that the huskies would revive.
Shackleton started showing signs of scurvy and the whole team were on the verge of starvation, they had travelled 300 miles further than anyone before and were just 400 miles from the South Pole.
Amazingly the British government thought they were having too good a time of it and sent a rescue boat, but luckily the Discovery was finally able to break free of the ice and Scott was able to return at the helm of his own vessel.
