The second felony trial stemming from last year’s Unite the Right rally has come to its disappointing, if predictable, conclusion. Alex Michael Ramos was found guilty of malicious wounding, and the jury recommended a sentence of six years in prison.
I got to know Ramos as we shared a cell block in the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail. When we first met, it was kind of an odd situation. Ramos is Puerto Rican and he at first felt it necessary to correct me whenever I referred to our group as “White”. We sometimes referred to him as the Puerto RiKlan because he had rather notoriously earned himself a reputation as a Puerto Rican white supremacist, a thing that would have been quite humorous in any other context.
Ramos was an excellent example of what Donald Trump referred to as “very fine people on both sides”. Even if you think anyone making a stand for Whites is inherently evil, that just plain does not fit the description of Ramos. He was there for Southern heritage, and had no enthusiasm for ethnically cleansing North America.
I’ll reiterate what I said on the prior episode, that Ramos and other men on our side that weekend would have been well served to take a self defense class prior to arriving in Charlottesville. Harris was a violent thug, who assaulted numerous people and repeatedly lied in court at his own trial, and at the trials of Goodwin and Ramos. He had to be stopped, and the men who put an end to his carnage that day are heroes. Sadly, things were hectic that day and happening rapidly, so it should come as no surprise to anybody that things got out of hand.
That’s an understandable if imperfect reason to find a man guilty of misdemeanor assault. Sadly, the racial tensions that got Goodwin sentenced to ten years in prison, did not spare our Puerto Rican friend from getting sentenced to six. (White privilege strikes again, eh?)
