Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson joinsSven Longshanks to discuss the new Molotov-Ribbentrop-Mao Pact, which is an economic alliance between Germany, Russia and China.
German industry is already bypassing the sanctions against Russia, as they are making huge profits from doing so. These companies have more power than the German state and they have public opinion behind them. Putin spent a lot of time in East Germany and speaks German without an accent, he is well liked in Germany while America is seen as an occupier. With the bad blood that is between Merkel and Trump, now would be a perfect time for Germany to openly refuse to go along with the sanctions.
We also have the precedent set by Trump, that treaties and agreements between countries can just be torn up. The other countries involved in the Iran nuclear deal have all expressed a wish to keep the deal going and so has Iran. However doing so then runs the risk of sanctions being applied by America. This could be the final push needed for Germany to leave the EU and form an alliance with Russia.
If you add Turkey to this, who look like they are going to leave NATO to form a partnership with Russia, then you have a modern version of the old silk road opening up, with a trade route from Germany directly to China and back again. This could create a lot of wealth for the capitalists, whereas going along with America’s sanctions against Russia will deprive them of it. Really it all depends on what is more important for them, promoting buggery or earning money.
