That's right, it's time once again for Grandpa Lampshade's Thoughts of the Day and this week it's all about the First Amendment and freedom of speech. While the Constitution has taken quite a beating over the years, there are still remnants that are holding out even today and The First Amendment is one of those remnants. But how many of us actually take the time to appreciate not just the freedom of speech, but the principle behind it? I see people today who are offended because we call for the government to break up the large internet companies who wield so much power. These people are offended because this runs counter to their belief in minimal government and private property. They will say that the First Amendment protects you against government shutting down your freedom of speech, not private companies. However this is misguided in that it completely ignores the principle behind why the First Amendment was established at all! These people are essentially handing their enemies a free pass for having been clever enough to find a loophole. This is yet another example of the foolishness of allowing your so called principles to be used against you on the grounds of nothing more than a technicality.
In our Church of the Lampshade segment this week, our sermon is all about spiritual warfare. My friends make no mistake: you are in a spiritual battle. You are engaged in spiritual warfare. You as Christian believers are a step ahead of no- believers in that you recognize this and thus can be prepared for it. Are you going to be directly persecuted for reading Bible verses or talking about Jesus? Probably not. However I can guarantee you that if you speak the truth in the public square for long enough, persecution will come as sure as night follows day. Why is this? The scripture gives us the answer.
