The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko was in Israel for their holocaust holiday last week and he mentioned that because masses of Ukrainians were starved to death under Stalin’s tyranny, they had sympathy for the Jews suffering during the war. This has sent the head of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre into a fury, as it could lead to a ‘double genocide theory’ where the Jews lose their special status as the only victims of genocide ever.
He claims that what happened in Ukraine was not a real genocide as it was not just Ukrainians who died, but a genocide takes place if a people group in whole or in part are killed. He also claims there was no intent to kill Ukrainians, that it was just an attempt to collectivise farms, but if you starve people they will die. Nobody can claim to be ignorant of that.
Finally he lets slip the real reason for why the Jews must do all they can to prevent the Holodomor being classified as a genocide, because Jews were responsible for it in their role as Soviet commissars. He even manages to hold the contradictory view in the same quote that while the Jewish Soviets were no longer really Jews since they were no longer religious Jews, when the East Europeans rose up and killed their Soviet torturers then they magically become Jews again and part of a genocide against them.
