Andy starts this week’s re-run by continuing Harold’s stance on not commenting on current events like the mid-term elections and then explains why debates are not productive.
People usually only change their views after learning the truth for themselves through investigation, never through having an argument with someone with an opposing views.
All these debates do is cause people to dig their heels in more and become unreasonable. This is because other people are watching or listening, so it becomes more about preserving honour, than discovering what the truth is. This is unproductive, as the time spent in the debate could have been spent talking to someone who is already partially awake and keen to learn more, rather than keen to make you appear foolish.
There is also no way of deciding who has won the debate either, so this is usually decided by who appeared to be the most popular and this may not be the person who was correct, but the person who had the best vocabulary skills and gave the most humorous answers.
